Georgia Southern slips past Buccaneer women's tennis, 4-3

STATESBORO, Ga. (March 16, 2003) - Georgia Southern's Marion Leuillier's three-set victory over Buccaneer junior Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) in No. 5 singles play clinched the Eagles 4-3 Southern Conference victory over East Tennessee State Sunday afternoon at Hanner Courts. The Buccaneers fell to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in SoCon play, while Georgia Southern moved to 5-5 and 2-1. Georgia Southern took the doubles point with wins from the first and second doubles pairings. Stephanie Tyrell and Amy Bartlett defeated Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) 8-2 in first doubles, while Leuillier and Callie Ward posted an 8-1 victory over Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) at second doubles. The Buccaneers Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) defeated the tandem of Charlotte Bruneteaux and Kimberly Wollett at the number three doubles position. In singles competition, Georgia Southern and East Tennessee State split the first four matchups, with the Buccaneer receiving singles victories from Halim and Aldea, before Leuillier edged McInnis 6-1, 2-6 and 6-1 to seal the win for Lady Eagles. Arriaran defeated Callie Ward, 6-2, 6-1 at number six singles.
