Third ranked Chattanooga drops Buccaneer women's tennis, 6-1

Sunday, April 06, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2003) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team fell, 6-1, to third ranked Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Complex. With the loss the Buccaneers fall to 10-15 (1-6) in Southern Conference play, while Chattanooga moves to 12-9, 6-2 on the year. Chattanooga won the doubles point with victories at the number two and three positions. ETSU's Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) defeated Chattanooga's Catherine Allen and Cynthia Oulevay, 9-7. In singles action the Mocs dominated, winning five of the six matches. ETSU's lone victory came at number four singles as Buccaneer freshman, Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.), defeated Chattanooga junior, Saskia van Velze, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. "We were tired today," Buccaneer head coach Steve Brooks said. "We have played three tough teams in a row and I think that challenge is what we need as we head into the conference tournament. If we want to make a run in the tournament we will have to play tough teams back-to-back." ETSU will host their final two matches of the season as Appalachian State travels to Johnson City on April 12, followed by Wofford on April 13. The Southern Conference tournament will begin April 16 in Charleston, S.C. EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY 1, Chattanooga 6 Singles 1. Charlotte Goude (UTC) def.
