JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (April 13, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's women's tennis team fell to Wofford, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in their final regular season match. The Buccaneers took the doubles point, winning at the number two and three positions. Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) defeated Wofford's Lauran Marie Whisenhunt and Mary Wallace DeBerry, 8-4 at number two doubles. Juniors, Courney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) defeated the Terrier tandem of Meghan Turner and Delaine Hare, 8-6, at the number three spot. ETSU picked up two singles victories from Halim and freshman Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.), at the number two and four positions. Halim defeated Whisenhunt in a three set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 1-1 (10-5), while Aldea dropped Wofford's Tara Hartness in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The loss drops the Buccaneers to 11-16 overall, 2-7 in Southern Conference play. East Tennessee State will travel to Charleston, S.C., April 16-19, for the 2003 Southern Conference Tournanment.
