CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 16, 2003) - Eighth-seeded East Tennessee State topped ninth seeded Appalachian State, 5-2, in the first round of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships at Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel this morning. The Buccaneers earned the doubles point winning the first two matches. Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) defeated Donna Altenberger and Kasia Finkowksi, 8-3, at number one doubles. Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) dropped Salem Kirven and Tammy Beaulieu, 8-2, at the number two spot. The Buccaneer tandem of Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) led Victoria Moody and Elena Berger, 7-5, in a match that did not finish. In singles play, Ziolkowska cruised to the number one singles victory over Finkowski, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Halim defeated Finkowska, 6-1, 6-0 at the number two position, while Irey picked up the number three singles victory over Moody, 6-3, 7-5. At number four singles, Buccaneer freshman Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) led Berger, 6-3, 4-1 in a match that did not finish. The Buccaneers will return to action tomorrow morning as they take on the number one seeded Furman Paladins at 9:30 at the City of Charleston Farmfield Courts.
