JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 1, 2003) - The Southern Conference today named East Tennessee State sophomore catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) Baseball Player-of-the-Week after his performance Saturday in a doubleheader sweep over conference rival Wofford. Moore shares the award with Davidson outfielder Sam Navarro, who had a stellar weekend against Appalachian State. Over the last two weeks, Moore has been one of the hottest hitters in collegiate baseball. He has batted .436 in his last nine games, and continued his torrid streak against the Terriers. In the Saturday twinbill, Moore led ETSU to two dramatic come-from-behind victories in their final at-bats. He hit the game-winning two-run homer in a game one 12-inning marathon, then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth in game two. In Saturday's opener, Moore went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs. In the bottom of the fourth and ETSU down 2-0, Moore led off the inning with a walk, then, with some great baserunning, scored the Bucs' first run of the game on a single by sophomore designated hitter Davis Burklin (Knoxville, Tenn.) that was misplayed in the outfield. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with ETSU trailing 10-8 and one out, Moore drilled a double to right center, then scored on a double down the left field line by freshman first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.). In his next at bat, Moore came up with possibly the biggest hit of ETSU's season, blasting a two-run homer over the right field wall with one out in the bottom of the 12th to give the Bucs the victory. In game two, Moore went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. With the Bucs down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh and two outs, Moore laced a double to left-center to drive in two runs and cut the Wofford lead to one. Then in the bottom of the ninth, with one out and the Terriers clinging to a one-run lead, Moore singled to left, advancing junior pinch-runner Troy Moock (Baton Rouge, La.), the eventual game-tying run to third. Moore would come home from second with the game-winning run two batters later on a single by Church. In addition to being on fire from the plate last week, Moore also played flawlessly behind the dish, catching all 21 innings in the two games. For the week, Moore batted .500 (5-10) with a home run, four RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles and two walks. He tallied a slugging percentage of 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .583. On the season, Moore is second on the team in batting with a .318 average. With his recent hot streak, Moore has raised his batting average 101 points in his last nine games. He is tied for first on the team in doubles (6), and is second on the club with a .482 slugging percentage and a .383 on-base percentage. He is also tied for second on the team with two home runs and is third with 13 RBIs. In Southern Conference games, Moore leads the Bucs with a .435 batting average, and has hit four doubles, one home run and has driven in nine runs. East Tennessee State returns to the diamond on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face the University of Tennessee from Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
