CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 19, 2003) - The Citadel scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat East Tennessee State, 9-4, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon in Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. The win for the Bulldogs snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Citadel (21-17, 11-6 SoCon) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning on three hits, two Buc errors and a wild pitch. Brook Dantzler got the inning started when he reach third on a fielding error on ETSU junior centerfielder Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) and then scored on Josh Stackley's RBI double to left. Stackley, who moved to third on a Trent Weathers single, scored on a wild pitch that also moved Weathers into scoring position. Following the wild pitch and an ETSU error that allowed Will Coker to safely reach base, Jon Aughey doubled to left driving in Weathers to round out the scoring for the Dogs in the second. ETSU (11-23, 7-12 SoCon) answered with one run in the top of the third as Friday night's hero, junior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) singled through the right side of the Bulldog infield plating freshman right fielder Jordan Abromovitz (South Park, Pa.) cutting the lead to 3-1. Citadel starting pitcher Ken Egelton got the next two ETSU hitters to ground out to end the rally with a runner at second base. The Bucs narrowed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth on a RBI base hit by sophomore catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) that saw senior first baseman Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) score from second base. ETSU took the lead in the sixth as Abromovitz hit a two-run homer to right pushing the Bucs ahead 5-3. Freshman third baseman Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored on the Abromovitz homer. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs rallied to take the lead, 6-5, on Dantzler's second career home run. Cannon led off the inning with a single to right. Following, a fly-out by Chris Ard, Dantzler blasted the 3-1 pitch over the right field wall to capture the lead. The Citadel never looked back, adding four more runs in the seventh to lead 9-4. After a RBI single by Jason Randall that scored Aughey, who started the inning with a triple down the left field line, the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a Cannon walk and an Ard infield single. Dantzler then came up with his second big hit of the day as he emptied the bases on a three-RBI double to left making the score 9-4.
