JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 4, 2003) - UNC Asheville tied their season-high in runs scored in defeating East Tennessee State 15-1 Sunday night from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The win gives the Bulldogs a weekend sweep of the Bucs, having won both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Asheville, N.C. UNCA got on the board early, scoring three runs in the top of the second. With two outs in the inning, shortstop Scott Stotlar, second baseman Robert Rudder and third baseman Steve Burnich all walked to load the bases. Center fielder Jake McConiga then came to the plate and drove in all three runners with a double to left center. East Tennessee State cut the Bulldog lead to 3-1, scoring a run in the bottom of the third. Junior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) led off the inning with an infield single. He advanced to third on a single to right field by freshman outfielder Jordan Abromovitz (South Park, Pa.). Freshman catcher Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) brought Howdeshell home on a fielder's choice. That was the only run that ETSU's offense could produce this evening, as UNC Asheville starter Steven Cook was on his game. The junior righty pitched eight innings, scattering eight hits, allowing the one run, walking two and striking out eight. The Bulldogs scored another run in the top of the fifth, and two more in the sixth. Right fielder Grant Rembert led off the fifth with a double and scored on a single by the subsequent batter, by first baseman Bill Carley. Rudder led off the sixth with a walk then advanced to third with one out when McConiga reached on an error. Rudder came home on a on a ground out by left fielder Steve Sherman. Rembert brought McConiga home with a single up the middle. UNC Asheville ran their lead to 7-1 with a run in the seventh. Catcher Nick Jaska singled up the middle with one out, stole second, advanced to third on an error then scored on another Buccaneer error. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach by bringing 12 men to the plate and scoring eight runs in the top of the eighth. The first eight men to the plate in the frame reached base and scored. The big blows of the inning were a two-run homer by Drew Sandri and a two-run double by Carley. Cook raised his record to 7-4 with the win. ETSU freshman lefty Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) was charged with the loss (2-6) after pitching 5.2 innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits. He also walked seven and struck out two. The Bucs were led at the plate by Howdeshell and Church, who each had two hits on the evening. Rembert had four hits for the Bulldogs, driving in three runs and scoring two. Carley drove in four runs while McConiga drove in three. The Buccaneers return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they travel to Tennessee Tech.
