ETSU's Smith, Wadood earn All-SoCon honors

Sunday, March 02, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 2, 2003) - One day after earning its third-straight Southern Conference North Division championship and a bye in this week's SoCon Tournament, the good news kept coming for the East Tennessee State men's basketball program on Sunday. The Southern Conference announced that true freshman guard Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.) was selected by the conference's sports information directors as the SoCon freshman of the year, while junior forward Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Va.) made his second-straight appearance on the 10-player All-SoCon Team as selected by the league's coaches. "This is quite an accomplishment for two fine players in our program," said ETSU head coach Ed DeChellis. "Tim has played extremely well for us despite being a freshman, and for the past two years Zakee has been a key to our team's success. I'm very proud of both of them." The 5-foot-9 Smith - who becomes only the third player in ETSU history to win this honor - is the league's leading freshman scorer, picking up an average of 14.4 points a contest. He currently ranks third in scoring for the Bucs, and is 18th in the nation with 2.5 steals per contest. The last Buccaneer to be named freshman of the year was ETSU great Greg Dennis in 1987-88. Meanwhile, Wadood is currently second on the team with 14.5 points per game and leads the Bucs with 7.6 rebounds a contest. The 6-foot-5 forward is also third in the nation with 3.2 steals a game and leads the Bucs with 2.2 blocks per contest. ETSU returns to play Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C. At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Bucs will face the winner of the Wofford-UNC Greensboro game scheduled for Wednesday. 2003 Southern Conference Coaches All-Conference Team Graham Bunn, Appalachian State Shawn Hall, Appalachian State Ashley Champion, Chattanooga Troy Wheless, College of Charleston Wayne Bernard, Davidson Zakee Wadood, East Tennessee State Karim Souchu, Furman Julius Jenkins, Georgia Southern Kevin Martin, Western Carolina Mike Lenzly, Wofford 2003 Southern Conference SIDs All-Freshman Team Tim Smith, East Tennessee State Alphonso Pugh, Chattanooga Brendan Winters, Davidson Ian Johnson, Davidson Tyler Berg, Wofford
