East Tennessee State Sits Second After First Round Of Carpet Capitol Collegiate
Friday, September 27, 2002 Dalton, Ga. (Sept. 27, 2002) - East Tennessee State's men's golf team had an impressive first round at the Carpet Capitol Collegiate, firing a team total of 284 (-4), the team's lowest round of the season. The Buccaneers' score was good enough for second place after the first round, one stoke ahead of UNLV and two ahead of Clemson. Florida has the first-round lead as the Gators shot a 278 (-10). The Tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech, is being played at the Farm Golf Club on a par 72, 6,906-yard course. The field of 18 teams features 15 squads that are in the latest Precept Top-25 coaches' poll. Sophomore Marcos Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica) led the Bucs with a round of 68 (-4), a score that puts him in fourth place individually, just two shots off the lead. Sophomore Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) also had a sub-par round for ETSU, shooting a one-under 71, good for a tie for 13th. Sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) and senior James Johnson (Barbados) also had fine first rounds for ETSU, with Hobson carding a 72 (E) and Johnson a 73 (+1), putting the top four Bucs all within five shots of one another. Sophomore Hamilton Wheeler (Bowling Green, Ky.) closed out the scoring on the day for the Bucs with a 77 (+5).
