East Tennessee State Soccer Begins Conference Play

Johnson City, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State women's soccer team (1-2-1) opens Southern Conference play against the Georgia Southern Eagles (2-3) at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001. The Buccaneers will play The College of Charleston Cougars (0-2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001 at Liberty Bell. Georgia Southern shut out Mercer University in Statesboro, Ga. on Tuesday, 4-0. The Eagles are led by sophomore Katie Szeghalmi who has two goals, one assist and six shots in four games this season. Southern leads the series 4-0 over ETSU. The College of Charleston's last game was on Sept. 9th at American University. The Cougars lost that match 1-3. They play again on Friday night with their first conference game against Appalachian State. Charleston leads the series against ETSU 3-0, with a 3-1 victory over the Bucs during their only trip to Johnson City. The Buccaneers last played on Sept. 9th in a shutout victory over South Carolina State in Orangeburg. The Bucs are led on defense by goalkeeper Heather Sanden. The Sophomore from Manassas, Va. has played 300 minutes, earned 42 saves and has a save percentage of .894 in four games this season. Sanden helped the team in a double overtime tie against Radford at home by earning 17 saves. ETSU plays Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 21st at 7:00 pm and Charleston on Sunday, Sept. 23rd at 2:00 pm. Both games will be held at Liberty Bell Soccer Complex.
