ETSU Soccer Loses Conference Opener

Friday, September 21, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State women's soccer team (1-2-1) were defeated by the Georgia Southern Eagles (3-3) at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex 2-3 in overtime. The Buccaneers were off to a fast start as senior forward Kristin Redfern scores the first goal just two minutes into the game. Redfern would not stop there. The Alexandria, Va. native scores again off a header at the 16:52 mark. After that, neither team could quite get the ball in the goal until after the half. Georgia Southern kept working on the Bucs until their break came. A penalty kick at the 73rd minute by senior Andrea Pfeiffer got the Eagles back into the game. At literally the last minute, Geogia Southern's Jessie Fream is assisted by Jackie Kinsey and Stephanie Stein to score the tying goal. The Eagles did have a scare when goalkeeper Kari Gast went out of the game with an ankle injury with five minutes left in regulation. No word on how serious that injury could be. The Eagles wasted no time with Kinsey scoring the winning goal three minutes into the sudden victory overtime period. ETSU had some outstanding performances in the game. Redfern had four shots on goal and scored the only two goals for the Bucs. Senior Lisa Gallagher shot the ball six times, four were on goal and credited with an assist. Goalkeeper Heather Sanden faced 25 shots, had 10 saves, played all 93 minutes. The ETSU soccer team will continue conference play by hosting the College of Charleston Cougars Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex.
