JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 19, 2001) -- East Tennessee State senior guard Erin Thurman (Hixson, Tenn.) scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half as the Lady Bucs defeated Tennessee Tech, 82-73, Wednesday night from Memorial Center in Johnson City. The Lady Bucs (6-4) came out fire to begin the game, building an 11-0 lead with 16:11 remaining in the first half. Freshman guard Summer Jones (Virgie, Ky.) ignited the run, scoring seven points in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game. The Golden Eaglettes (7-4) would slowly claw their waw back into the game, eventually taking a one-point lead, 18-17 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. There were four lead changes over the rest of the half, as Tennessee Tech led going into the locker room, 31-30. The lead changed hands twice to begin the second hal. The final time was as junior forward Misty Copas (Kingsport, Tenn.) knocked down a jumper to make the score 34-33 with 18:44 left in the game and give the Lady Bucs the lead for good. The Golden Eaglettes cut the ETSU lead to three at 46-43 with 13:11 remaining. At that point, the Lady Bucs turned it on again, going on a 17-5 run, giving them their largest lead of the game, 63-48, with 9:03. Tennessee Tech never gave up, fighting back and cutting the lead to three on several more occasions late in the second half. The most important play in the game may have been a layup by senior forward Megan Jackson (Paris, Tenn.) with 1:55 remaining in the game. Tennessee Tech had again cut the lead to three, 74-71. Jackson drove the lane and was fouled, but was still able to put the ball in the basket. Jackson converted the three-point play and essentially ended any hope of a Golden Eaglette comeback. ETSU would widen their lead to nine over the last two minutes by knocking down five of six free throws. Thurman led ETSU with 19 points, tying her season-high, set against Wofford on Dec. 5. Sophomore forward Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) tied her career-high with 14 points on 5-9 shooting. Freshman Ashley Reed (Barrackville, W.Va) scored 11 points and pulled down a game and career-high nine rebounds. Jackson (13) and Jones (11) also scored in double-digits for ETSU. Tennessee Tech was led by senior forward Janet Holt, who scored 20 points on 8-16 shooting. Jennifer Wilhelm (14) and Leah Bird (12) also scored in double-digits for the Golden Eaglettes. The win was ETSU head coach Karen Kemp's first over Tennessee Tech and it is only the second time in 18 meetings that the Lady Bucs have defeated the Golden Eaglettes. This also marks another win for the Lady Bucs when they reach the 80-point plateau. Over the last three seasons, ETSU is 22-1 when scoring more than 80. The Lady Bucs will now take some time off for the holidays before hosting SoCon rival Chattanooga on Dec. 29 at 1:00 p.m. from Memorial Center.
