Women's Basketball Signs Two to National Letters of Intent

Wednesday, May 01, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (May 1, 2002) -- East Tennessee State women's basketball head coach Karen Kemp Wednesday announced the signing of two women's basketball players to join the Lady Buc program for the 2002-03 season. TopeŽ Ogunniyi (Lanham, Md.), comes to the Lady Bucs as a junior college transfer from Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. The 5-6 shooting guard led Montgomery to a fifth-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament in Carnegie, N.Y. Last season, Ogunniyi averaged 15 points, 3.1 rebounds and five steals per game for coach Donald Williams. TopeŽ played high school basketball for Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md. "Her strength is her quickness," said Kemp. She is a great defensive player and can blow by an opponent with the ball in her hand on offense. She can shoot the three, but her strength is putting the ball on the floor." The second signee is Adrienne Walker (Augusta, Ga.), a 5-4 point guard/shooting guard. Adrienne played for Lynn Brantley at T.W. Josey High School in Augusta, the same coach and school as former Lady Buc All-American forward DeShawne Blocker. During her senior year, Walker averaged 27.3 points, 7.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game. "Adrienne is a tremendous scorer," commented Kemp. "She can shoot the three as well as penetrate and hit a pull-up jumper. She is just an incredible athlete." These signees join 5-5 point guard B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) in the 2002-03 Lady Buc recruiting class. "The additions of TopeŽ and Adrienne will give us a lot of quickness on the perimeter, something that we have been lacking for the last couple of years," said Kemp. "They both have outstanding speed and quickness, each of them competed on their track teams in high school. TopeŽ was offered a scholarship from a Division I school for track, but decided to play basketball instead. These two players will be able to apply defensive pressure on the perimeter and will add a lot more excitement to our team."
