Sunday, February 17, 2002

Columbia, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2002) - In the final game of the three-game series, South Carolina again unleashed a powerful attack, belting out 16 hits, including four home runs, as the Gamecocks completed the series sweep with a 14-5 win over East Tennessee State. For the second straight game, the Bucs got on the scoreboard with a first inning run. Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Kirk Keithley (Peoria, Ill.) led the game off with singles and Traylor later came around to score on a pair of wild pitches for an early 1-0 lead. South Carolina answered in its half of the inning, putting together three singles, with Yaron Peters hit bringing home a run that tied the game. After not scoring in the second, South Carolina then scored in every inning after, including a five -run fifth that proved to be too much for the Bucs. The fifth was highlighted by a two-run double from Trey Dyson and a solo home run by Landon Powell. ETSU got two back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Davis Burklin (Knoxville, Tenn.) and an RBI single by Michael Giroud (St. Petersburg, Fla.) to make it 10-3, but it was too little, too late for the Bucs as South Carolina went on to score four more times to put the game out of reach. The Bucs got their final two runs in the top of the ninth when both Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.) and Giroud scored on wild pitches. Traylor and Giroud each had a pair of hits to lead the Bucs' 11-hit attack. Mike Bauer (Kingsport, Tenn.) started and took the loss for ETSU, throwing four innings and giving up seven runs on six hits. Peters had a perfect day for USC, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and runs. Gary Bell started for the Gamecocks and went 5.1 innings, giving up nine hits and three runs. He struck out seven Buc hitters without a walk. East Tennessee State will have its first home games of the season when it hosts North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Feb. 23 in a doubleheader. The games will start at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
