UNCG Pitching Too Much For ETSU In 9-1 Loss To Spartans

Sunday, March 17, 2002

Greensboro, N.C. (Mar. 17, 2002) - UNC Greensboro's Jay Metzger pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead the Spartans to a 9-1 Southern Conference baseball win over East Tennessee State on a cold, damp afternoon in Greensboro. The win gave UNCG the series two games to one. Metzger's pitching was the story of the day, as held the Bucs off the scoreboard after surrendering an unearned run in the first inning. With one out, Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.) bunted down the third base line and was safe at first when the throw from UNCG third baseman Justin Saltalamacchia was wide of first. Terry then moved to second on a balk on Metzger and to third on Bryan Crouse's (Kingston, Tenn.) single up the middle. Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) then plated Terry with a fielder's choice ball to short, giving him at least one RBI in each game of the series for the Bucs. That would prove to be all that ETSU could muster off of Metzger, who struck out four and walked two to gain his first win of the season. UNCG wasted no time gaining the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. After a pair of singles to start the inning put runners on first and third, ETSU starter Donnie Sharp (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) coaxed the next hitter into fouling out to third. Ryan Gordan then hit a liner back up the middle that ETSU second baseman Brandon Cross got his glove on, but could not hold on to, loading the bases. A sac fly and bloop double to left by the next to Spartan hitters gave them a 2-1 advantage. In the bottom of the second UNCG scored a pair of insurance runs that proved to be icing on the cake. After getting the first two hitters of the inning, Sharp gave up three consecutive hits that scored one run. Gordan then hit a hard, short hop ball to first that handcuffed Boruff for an error, allowing another run to score. UNCG added another run in the fourth and four more in the seventh when Sharp tired. The Spartans loaded the bases with one out before Sharp hit a batter to bring in one run, prompting Mike Bauer (Kingsport, Tenn.) to come in from the bullpen. Bauer promptly walked the next hitter and then gave up a single and a wild pitch, before settling down to get the final two outs of the inning. ETSU will take a break from SoCon play this week, playing a pair of games at Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the Wednesday match up slated for 3:00 p.m.
