Sunday, March 24, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (March 24, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-13) lost 5-2 to the University of Dayton Flyers (12-2) Sunday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Center. The Lady Bucs started the day off by winning the doubles point but Dayton would take five singles wins to earn the victory. ETSU took the doubles point with two wins. Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) easily took care of Dayton's Katie Landrigan and Julie Green, 8-0. The Flyers would come back in the No. 3 doubles match when Moreen Wiggins and Angela Trigilio defeated Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N.C.), 8-1. The deciding match was an exciting one between ETSU's team of Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and the Dayton team of Sarah Miller and Megan Flynn. The Lady Bucs were behind most of the match before tying it up at 6-6. Then Villavicencio and Arriaran pulled out the 8-6 win to secure the doubles point for ETSU. Dayton would win most of the singles matches but not without a fight from the Lady Bucs. Villavicencio would end her No. 4 match early with Christy Whalen due to a nagging ankle injury. Landrigan shut out Luvis in both sets of their No. 6 match. Courtney McDowell defeated Jones 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 match. Irey and Erin Kirkland would have a great No. 1 match. Kirkland would win in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, over Irey. Halim would comeback after losing her first set, 7-5, to Rebecca Stanchin and takes the second set, 6-1. In the third set, Stanchin would edge out Halim 6-4 to win the match. The last match to end was between Arriaran and Angie Del Rosso. Arriaran lost the first set, 6-4, then won the second set 6-1. The third set went into a tiebreaker with Arriaran scoring the win for the Lady Bucs. The women travel to Greenville, S.C. to play Furman at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26th.
