Women's Tennis Falls To Western Carolina, 4-3

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 6, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State women's tennis dropped a tight match to Western Carolina, 4-3, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon from the WCU Reid Gym Courts in Cullowhee, N.C. In doubles action, ETSU won the point after taking two of the three contests. At No. 1 doubles, ETSU sophomore Jessica Irey (Belle Glade, Fla.) and freshman Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Western Carolina's Shelby Fitzpatrick and Shannon Zalinski, 8-4. Buccaneer No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) were victorious over Catamount team Emmy King and Kristin Cotton, 8-6. WCU won in the three spot by default, as there was not a third Buccaneer team. In singles play, the Catamounts won four of six contests to win the match. At No. 1 singles, Kristin Munn of Western Carolina defeated Halim, 6-2, 6-2. ETSU's Irey was victorious at No. 2 singles over Western Carolina's Fitzpatrick, 6-2, 7-5. Buccaneer Arrarian won at No. 3 singles over Catamount Zalinski, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Buccaneer Villavicencio fell to Catamount Erin Johnson, 6-3, 6-1. Western Carolina's Cotton defeated ETSU sophomore Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-5. Western Carolina won the point at No. 6 singles by default, as there was not a sixth ETSU singles player. The loss drops East Tennessee State's record to 1-16 on the season, 0-5 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina runs their record to 6-9, 1-5 in the SoCon. The Bucs return to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m. as they face Georgia Southern from the ETSU Tennis Center. Match Results: Singles #1 Kristin Munn (WCU) def.
