ETSU Gains Split At UNC Asheville In Baseball Action

Wednesday, May 08, 2002

Asheville, N.C. (May 7, 2002) - East Tennessee State and UNC Asheville completed their three-game mid-week series with a doubleheader this afternoon in Asheville. The Bulldogs got a three-hit complete game performance from Jason Walker on the mound as UNCA took the first game 4-1. The Buccaneers bounced back in the second game behind the pitching of Mike Bauer (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Jackson Simerly (Bluff City, Tenn.) to take a 4-2 decision. East Tennessee State (19-28) drew first blood in the game one, scoring an unearned run in the fourth. With one out Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.) singled, the Bucs' first hit of the game, but was then forced at second on Brandon Cross' (Bluff City, Tenn.) fielder's choice. Cross reached second when the second baseman's relay got past the first baseman. Cross came around to score the first run of the contest when Mike Giroud's (St. Petersburg, Fla.) grounder went through the Bulldog's shortstop's legs for the second error of the inning. UNCA (20-24) bounced back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. Scott Stotlar followed with a sac fly that tied the game. ETSU got out of trouble, turning its second double play with the bases loaded of the day to end the inning. The Bulldogs scored again in the fifth to take their first lead of the day on an RBI single from Jake McConiga. UNCA loaded the bases again in the sixth with one out and got an RBI single from Roberts to extend the lead to 3-1. Simerly came on in relief of Josh Kite (Greenville, Tenn.), but walked home another run before getting an inning ending double play. That would be all that Walker would need. He threw a complete game three hitter at the Bucs, allowing just one unearned run while striking out five with out issuing a walk. Kite took the loss for ETSU, going 5.1 innings and allowing all four UNCA runs. ETSU started things quickly in the nightcap. After a pair of singles from Terry and Giroud to start the game, Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) brought in the first run with a single up the middle. After a walk loaded the bases, Scott Rose (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) punched one to right center that scored a pair to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bucs. UNCA wasted no time to score its first runs of the game, getting a pair in the bottom of the inning off Bauer on four straight hits to start the inning. Bauer settled down after the first, not allowing another run until he came out in favor of Simerly in the sixth. He earned his first collegiate win with 5.1 innings of work, scattering nine hits. Simerly retired the five hitters in faced to earn his first save of the season. East Tennessee State will return to Southern Conference action this weekend, hosting Western Carolina in a three-game series. Game one will be Friday, May 10 at Cardinal Park with game time 7:00 p.m.
