No. 59 Men's Tennis Shuts Out Appalachian State, 7-0

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 2, 2002) -- The No. 59-ranked East Tennessee State men's tennis team won their third-straight match, shutting out Southern Conference rival Appalachian State, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and senior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated the Appalachian State team of Erez Cohen and Doug Ormsby at No. 1 singles, 8-5. Junior Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and sophomore Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Mexico) of ETSU were victorious over Mountaineers Ben Shuster and Alon Cohen at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. ETSU sophomores Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) defeated Jason Nius and Robbie Ormsby of Appalachian State at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. The Buccaneers continued their momentum by sweeping all seven singles matches. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich defeated Appalachian's Erez Cohen, 6-1, 1-0 (ret.). Buccaneer Fernandez was victorious over Mountaineer Doug Ormsby at No. 2 singles in a tight match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, ETSU got another point as Iglesias defeated Appalachian State's Shuster, 7-6, 6-2. ETSU's Sahagun defeated Robbie Ormsby of the Mountaineers at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4. The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Salazar was victorious over Appalachian's Alon Cohen, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Frederico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) of ETSU won the point at No. 6 singles, as he defeated ASU's Jacob Stapleton, 7-6, 6-2. ETSU junior Francisco Diaz (Weston, Fla.) won the final match of the day, winning over Mountaineer Derrick Boone, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 7 singles. The win runs ETSU's record to 10-6, 5-0 in Southern Conference play. Appalachian State falls to 7-9 on the season, 2-4 in SoCon matches. "We turned in a great team effort today," said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins. "We got great play from our doubles teams and our singles players. It is good to have some momentum heading into Friday's match against Wofford." The Bucs return to action on Friday, Apr. 5 at 2:30 p.m. against Wofford from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
