Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 25, 2002) -- Virginia Tech spoiled Senior Day for the East Tennessee State softball team, sweeping a doubleheader from the Buccaneers, 10-1 and 6-0, Thursday afternoon from Metro-Kiwanis Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs (22-28) got on the board first in game one, as they scored a run in the bottom of the first off of Hokie starter Clarissa Crowell. Sophomore leftfielder Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) led off the inning with a walk and was bunted to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman centerfielder Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.). Vandergriff stole third and later scored on a passed ball. Virginia Tech (34-16) took the lead in the top of the second, striking for three runs. With two outs, second baseman Shanel Garofalo singled and moved to second on a walk to third baseman Megan Evans. Courtney Brinkman then tripled to right field, scoring Garofalo and Evans. Brinkman came home on a single by shortstop Carmen Farmer. The Hokies scored four more runs in the top of the fifth to widen their lead to 7-1. Crowell and catcher Amy Voorhees drew back-to-back walks with one out. Mindi Wylie singled to centerfield to load the bases. Evans, with two outs, doubled to right center, scoring all three runners. Game two began as a pitchers duel between ETSU freshman Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Virginia Tech senior Ashley Dobbe, as the game was scoreless until the top of the fifth. With two outs in the frame, Farmer hit an infield single and advanced to second on a single by Wylie. Voorhees then reached on an error, scoring Farmer and advancing Wylie to second. Crowell then hit a two-RBI double and advanced to third on the throw to the plate. Crowell would score on another error to make the score 4-0. The Hokies would score their final two runs in the top of the seventh. Farmer hit an inside the park home run down the right field line. Wylie then singled to left field and reached second following an error on a Voorhees fielder's choice. Crowell then singled to load the bases.
