Friday, November 16, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. - A pair of East Tennessee State football players, juniors Scott Carter (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Kai Shreckenberg (Wuppertal, Germany) are among 21 players that have been chosen to the 2001 Football Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The district the team represents include the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be selected a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, be at least a sophomore and carry a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2. Carter, the teams starting fullback, is a sport management major. So far this season he is the team's second leading rusher with a total of 208 yards on the ground, scoring a pair of touchdowns. He has also caught four passes for another 13 yards. Shreckenberg, a member of the Bucs defensive line, is majoring in microbiology with a minor in chemistry at ETSU. He had started every game this season until last week when he missed the Chattanooga game with an injury. He has totaled 32 tackles this season, including a sack and a pair of tackles for loss. This marks the 50th year of the Academic All-America program. Both players' names will now appear on the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America national ballot. That team will be announced on Dec. 10, 2001.
