Lady Bucs Prepare to Open SoCon Season Against Davidson

The East Tennessee Lady Bucs open their 2000-01 Southern Conference season when they face off against the Davidson Wildcats Wednesday night from the Belk Arena in Davidson N.C.

The Last Time Out: The Lady Bucs made a spirited second-half rally, but could not overcome a early deficit as they fell to the Radford Highlanders, 89-76, Wednesday night Nov. 29 ... After trailing 44-33 at halftime, ETSU went on a 7-0 run to begin the second stanza ... Junior guard Erin Thurman sparked the rally, scoring 14 of her 17 points in the second half ... The Lady Bucs cut the lead to three at 57-54 with 9:05 to play, but the Highlanders ran off six unanswered points to regain control and hold on for the win ... ETSU also received strong games from sophomore Misty Copas (13 points, 5 rebounds) and freshman guard Racquel Ellis (13 points).

The Lady Bucs Against Davidson: The last time the Lady Bucs and Wildcats squared off was an 85-75 victory for Davidson on Feb. 1, 2000 ... ETSU had four players score in double-digits (Erica Babb, Erin Thurman, Chris Forman and Angie Fickes), but Davidson shot an unbelieveable 63.8 percent from the floor, including 6-12 from behind the arc ... The Lady Bucs and Wildcats have split their season series in each of the last two seasons, with the home team winning each game.

Thurman Heating Up: Junior guard Erin Thurman has averaged 16.5 points over the Lady Bucs last two games ... She has nailed seven three-pointers, and is 8-10 from the free-throw line in that span ... Thurman dished out five assists against Radford last Wednesday night.

Trantham Off To a Hot Start: Freshman forward Lauren Trantham has led the Lady Bucs in rebounding in four of her first five collegiate contests ... She also led ETSU in scoring with 11 points in their game against Memphis in the first round of the Lady Tiger Classic on Nov. 24 ... She registered back-to-back double-doubles in both games of the Lady Tiger Classic.

SoCon Leaders: Freshman forward Lauren Trantham is ranked third in the Southern Conference in rebounding with 7.8 per game ... Trantham is also second in offensive rebounding (3.4 pg) and eleventh in defensive rebounding (4.4 pg) ... Junior guard Erin Thurman is fourth in the conference with 1.8 three-pointers per game.

SoCon Consistency: The Lady Bucs' finished 12-6 last season in the Southern Conference ... The 12 wins tied a school record for conference wins set in 1998-99 when the Lady Bucs finished 12-5.

Number Change: Sophomore guard Samantha Copeland makes the switch from number 34 to 32 for the 2000-01 season.

Success in High Numbers: Last winter, the Lady Bucs were 13-2 when scoring 70-or-more points; 9-0 when scoring 80-or-more points ... The Lady Bucs were 7-1 when scoring 80-or-more points and 14-3 when scoirng 70-or-more points in 1998-99.

The Head Coach: Seventh-year head coach Karen Kemp has compiled a 83-86 (.491) record at ETSU ... She is the second winningest coach in Lady Buc basketball history and trails first-place Susan Yow by 35 victories ... Kemp passed former coach Debbie Richardson for second place on the all-time list with a 90-63 win over Western Carolina on February 22, 2000.

Lady Bucs in the Classroom: Three Lady Bucs, Angie Fickes, Chris Forman and Rachel Glass made the Southern Conference academic honor roll last season ... More impessively, the three guards were all repeat selections ... It was Forman's third such honor and Glass and Fickes' second ... This year, Forman will attempt to become the first Lady Buc to make the SoCon honor roll all four years.

The Lady Bucs on the Airwaves: The Lady Bucs' January 2nd game against Chattanooga will be televised live by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast at 5:00 p.m. ... It is a part of an ETSU/Chattanooga doubleheader on CSS as the men's game between the two teams will also be televised following the women's matchup.

Lady Bucs tabbed fifth: ETSU was picked fifth by Southern Conference coaches in the SoCon preseason coaches poll ... The Lady Bucs finished third last season in the final conference standings.

Injury Report: Sophomore guard Ann Marie Gates suffered an injury during practice at the Memphis Lady Tiger Invitational ... She is awaiting the results from an MRI and will not play ... Senior guard Leslie Burleson, redshirt freshman forward Shona Johnson and redshirt freshman guard Kiya Verdell are recovering from ACL injuries and will not play.
