Lady Bucs Fall to South Carolina, 117-71

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Junior forward Misty Copas led the East Tennessee State Lady Bucs with 14 points, but it was not enough to hold off the Lady Gamecock charge as South Carolina defeated ETSU, 117-71, on Tuesday evening from the Frank McGuire Arena in Columbia, S.C.
South Carolina led the Lady Bucs 65-34 at halftime. ETSU shot 42.9 percent from the floor while South Carolina shot a phenomenal 70.3 percent in the first stanza. Copas led the Lady Bucs in scoring in the first half with 10 points on 5-6 shooting while the Lady Gamecocks were led by Shaunzinski Gortman who tallied 16 points.
The second half started much as the first ended. The Lady Gamecocks began the second half on a 15-3 run on the way to outscoring ETSU 52-37 in the second stanza. The 117 points given up to the Lady Gamecocks are the most ever by an ETSU team. The previous high was 114, given up to Furman in 1990 and Duke in 1992.
For the game, ETSU shot 42 percent from the field while South Carolina shot 65 percent. From three-point range, the Lady Bucs shot 35 percent (6-17) and the Lady Gamecocks shot 57 percent (12-21). The Lady Gamecocks forced the Lady Bucs into 24 turnovers, scoring 39 points off of the miscues.
The Lady Bucs had three players score in double figures the guard tandem of senior Chris Forman and junior Erin Thurman scored 13 points each to join Copas. Thurman scored all of her points in the second half on 4-7 shooting and 3-5 from long distance. South Carolina was led by Gortman who ended up with 27 points.
The Lady Bucs continue on their South Carolina road trip as they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff Wednesday night.
