Erin Thurman Named Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Tuesday, January 09, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State junior guard Erin Thurman (Hixson, Tenn.) earned Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the week ending Jan.8.

Tuesday evening (Jan. 2) saw Thurman playing in front of her hometown crowd at Chattanooga. Once her nerves settled and she began to get open looks, Thurman caught fire. She led a spirited Lady Buc rally by draining five three-pointers in the final six minutes of play to draw ETSU back into the game. Thurman outscored the Lady Mocs 15-12 over the last 6:18 of the game. She ended the game with a then season-high 17 points, three assists and three steals.

After scoring eight points at Georgia Southern on Saturday (Jan. 6), Thurman turned in her crown jewel performance of the week at Appalachian State on Monday evening (Jan. 8). Thurman was truly scintillating as she scored a career-high 27 points in just 26 minutes of play to spark the Lady Bucs to a 101-78 victory over the Mountaineers. Thurman was 10-13 from the field, including 6-9 from three-point range. The 10 field goals is also a career-high and the six treys ties a career-high that she tallied twice in the 1999-2000 season.

Thurman was consistent in the Appalachian State game, hitting 5-7 field goal attempts and 2-4 from behind the arc in the first stanza, tallying 13 points. In the second half, Thurman scored 14 points on 5-6 shooting and 4-5 from three-point range. Thurman hit several big baskets in the second half to maintain the Lady Buc lead and discourage Appalachian State comeback attempts. Thurman also added three assists and three rebounds in the victory.

For the week, Thurman averaged 17.3 points per game on 19-37 shooting (51.4 percent) and 13-28 (46.4 percent) from three-point range. Thurman also added 2.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Thurman leads the league in three-point field goals made with 37, averaging 2.64 per game, and is ninth among scoring leaders with 12.1 points per game.

This is the second SoCon Player-of-the-Week honor for Thurman, who won the award in February of last season. This is the second such award for the Lady Bucs this season as senior guard Chris Forman won the honor for the week ending Dec. 12.

The Lady Bucs return to action as they host the College of Charleston at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 13 in Memorial Center.
