Lady Bucs Drop Nailbiter to Davidson, 70-67

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Davidson guard Janna Magette gave the Wildcats a 68-67 lead after a layup with 12 seconds remaining and made two free throws with six seconds left to seal a 70-67 win over ETSU on Saturday afternoon from Brooks Gym.

Davidson (7-12, 2-8) led 29-28 at the break after a defense oriented first half. The Wildcats shot 11-26 (.423) compared to the Lady Bucs (3-16, 3-7) 9-31 (.290). Davidson blocked five shots in the half while the Lady Bucs forced the Wildcats into 12 turnovers.

The largest lead of the game was 13 points, with Davidson holding a 59-46 lead with 9:04 remaining in the game. Over the next five and a half minutes, the Lady Bucs reeled off a 15-4 run, fueled by three steals by freshman guard Racquel Ellis. ETSU took a 67-66 lead with 56 seconds remaining after a made free throw by junior forward Megan Jackson. From then on, Magette took over, scoring the final four points of the game.

Both teams shot the lights out from three-point range, with the Wildcats shooting 47 percent (8-17) and the Lady Bucs shooting 9-18 (.500). ETSU held an advantage on the boards, outrebounding the taller Davidson squad, 40-29.

The Lady Bucs were led by senior guard Chris Forman, who scored 20 points on 6-14 shooting and 4-10 from three-point range. It was the second-highest scoring performance of her Lady Buc career. Her best scoring effort was a 32 point outburst at Davidson on Dec. 6, 2000. Junior guard Erin Thurman (14) and sophomore forward Misty Copas (10) also scored in double-digits for ETSU. Jackson, Copas and freshman center Jessica Lonon led the Lady Bucs with six rebounds. Ellis swiped a game-high four steals for ETSU.

Davidson was led by Magette, who tallied a career-high 28 points on 10-17 shooting and 5-9 from three-point range. Robyn Flewelling (13) and Ashley Hallsted (11) also tallied double-digit scoring efforts for the Wildcats.

Davidson coach John Filar reached a milestone in the game, recording his 100th victory with the win.

The Lady Bucs return to action as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on the Wofford Lady Terriers Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7:00 p.m. from Johnson Arena.
