Thursday, February 01, 2001

East Tennessee State used a 12-0 run to end the first half and then built a solid lead in the second half to defeat Wofford 69-60 Wednesday night in Spartanburg.

East Tennessee State improves to 4-16 overall and 4-8 in the Southern Conference. Wofford falls to 8-12 overall and 4-7 in the league.

Wofford, playing without starting point guard Natalie Walsh who was forced to the bench with the flu, took a five-point lead, 25-20, with 4:30 to play in the first half. However, East Tennessee State got five points from Erin Thurman to spark a 12-0 run the rest of the half to take a 33-25 lead at the intermission.

Wofford countered with a 13-4 run to open the second half and took a 38-37 lead with 14:29 to play in the game. Thurman, though, hit a jumper with 12:28 remaining to give the Lady Bucs the lead and ETSU would not trail again.

East Tennessee State built a 10-point lead on a layup by Misty Copas with 6:00 to play and stretched the lead to 13 points with a little over four minutes remaining. Wofford cut the lead to seven points with 41 seconds left, but could get no closer.

Thurman finished with a team-high 18 points and three steals. Racquel Ellis and Samantha Copeland added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jenny Nett led Wofford with 19 points and three rebounds before fouling out with 4:07 remaining in the game. Nancy Dubuisson recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Ridgill, who started in place of Walsh, flirted with a double-double of her own, finishing with eight assists and eight rebounds. Lucy Hines added nine rebounds and six blocks.

East Tennessee State next battles Chattanooga at 1:00 p.m. Saturday from Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
