Charleston, SC -- Kirk Keithley had a two-run single and pitcher Reid Casey scattered seven hits while going the distance as East Tennessee State edged the College of Charleston, 3-2, in Southern Conference college baseball action before 411 at Patriots Point Field Saturday afternoon.

ETSU (4-9, 1-1 SoCon) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Keithley led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Chad Boruff's single to right.

The Bucs extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when Keithley singled to left scoring Brandon Cross and Andy Baxter.

Charleston (8-6, 1-1) cut the margin to 3-1 in the eighth when with one out Brett Spivey doubled to center, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Nick Orlandos.

Charleston threatened in the ninth and came within inches of tying the game. Pinch hitter Hank Stepleton doubled to right center leading off the inning and scored when John McCarty's two-out double hit high off the wall in center field narrowing the lead to 3-2. McCarty was stranded when Matt Lauderdale struck out to end the game.

Casey (2-2) picked up the win allowing two runs with no walks and eight strikeouts. Ryan Mau (1-1) was the starter and loser for the Cougars surrendering three runs, two earned on five hits over 7 2/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out four.

The game was delayed 47 minutes in the top of the eighth inning because of rain.

The final game of the three-game series is schedule for 1:00 on Sunday.
