Head Coach Kim Tibbetts Resigns

Monday, January 22, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State University Athletic Department announced today that head women's volleyball coach Kim Tibbetts has announced her resignation effective February 2, 2001.

The former Kim Byrd, recently married Dr. Steve Tibbetts, a former ETSU professor, and current professor at California State University at San Bernardino.

"I am excited to enter this new phase of my life," Tibbetts said. "However, I am very sad to leave Johnson City. This is my home, I went to school here, I played here and I coached here. In all my time at ETSU, everyone has been supportive of our program."

"I have mixed emotions about this change," ETSU athletic director Todd Stansbury said. "This is a significant loss for our athletic program. We will miss Coach Tibbetts energy and enthusiasm but we are extremely appreciative of the foundation she has built at ETSU. I anticipate great things for Kim in the future and wish her only the best."

In three years as head coach, Tibbetts led the Bucs to a 44-44 overall record. ETSU went 16-13 last season, posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1992-93. Tibbetts 1999 squad finished 20-11, their first 20-win season since 1993.

A 1989 graduate of ETSU, Tibbetts was a standout on the volleyball court. She holds the all-time record for aces in a five-game match, block solos in a four-game match and total blocks in a four-game match. She ranks second all-time in service aces (189) and block solos (143). Tibbetts ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.287).

The ETSU athletic department will begin a national search immediately.
