East Tennessee State Falls To UNC Greensboro

CHARLESTON, S.C. UNC Greensboro scored eight runs in the final four innings to overcome a 5-1 deficit and defeat East Tennessee State, 9-6, in Game 9 of the Wendy's/Pepsi-Cola Southern Conference Baseball Tournament being played Joseph Riley Park.

The win advances UNCG (30-27) into tonight's 7:30 pm elimination game against the winner of the Appalachian State-College of Charleston game. East Tennessee State finishes its season at 23-32.

ETSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two runs in the third. Brandon Cross led off the second with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a two-base error off a ball hit by Jason Brotherton. The Bucs added two in the third when Andy Baxter stroked a two-out double that was followed by a Nathan Copeland home run.

UNCG scored once in the second to cut the lead to 3-1 when Chris Mittendorf doubled and was sacrificed to third before scoring when ETSU pitcher Tim Turner misplayed the bunt.

ETSU added two runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead when Kirk Keithley singled, scored on a double by Baxter, and Baxter scored on a single by Cross.

The Spartans scored four times in the fifth as Shane Schumaker hit a two-run homer, Jesse Lavender walked with the bases loaded, and another run scored on a wild pitch.

ETSU scored once in the sixth as Ryan Hyder and Keithley singled with one out and Copeland singled home Hyder.

UNCG won the game with a four-run outburst in the eighth. Schumaker started the inning with a double and Mittendorf followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Nick Lockhart put the Spartans in the lead at 7-6 with a two-run double. After ETSU made a pitching change, Doug Schutt and Chad Hayes each singled to drive in insurance runs.

UNCG's Ted Toler pitched 3.2 innings and fanned two in picking up the win to raise his record to 5-5. ETSU's Jackson Simerly saw his record fall to 3-4 after allowing three runs and four hits in two innings of work.
