Women's Tennis Falls to Tennessee Tech, 6-1

Johnson City, Tenn. -- Tennessee Tech took five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to down East Tennessee State in women's tennis action this afternoon from Cookeville, Tenn.

At No. 1 singles, East Tennessee's Paty Vega jumped out to a one set lead but Tennessee Tech's Lupita Hernandez fought back to win the match 6-7,6-2,6-4. No. 2 singles saw the only Buccaneer point of the day as Mami Inoue defeated Karmelina Rivera 6-0,6-0. At No. 3 singles, Jessica Irey jumped out in front by winning the first set, only to fall to Luciana Tamburini 3-6,6-0,6-1. Anastassia Mirnova defeated Cara Prupas 6-3,6-1 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Tatiana Arriaran was also defeated in No. 5 singles by Anita Obando 6-2,6-4. In the final singles match of the afternoon, Susan Torbett was defeated by Louise Holmvick 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Doubles action saw the team of Vega and Inoue take the match against Hernandez and Rivera 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Prupas and Aimee Villavicencio were defeated by Mirnova and Obando by a 8-2 count. The final doubles match saw the team of Tamburini and Carey Lay defeat Irey and Arriaran 8-4.

With the loss, the Bucs fall to 5-5 on the season. The Bucs will return home this weekend to host a pair of Southern Conference foes. The Southern Conference leading Furman Lady Paladians visit the Bucs on Friday, Mar. 30 for a 2:30 p.m. contest while The Bucs will entertain the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts on Sunday Apr. 1 at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will be played at the ETSU Tennis Center.
