Softball Splits Doubleheader With Radford

Tuesday, March 27, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State softball team split a doubleheader with Radford University, an 8-0 victory and an 11-4 loss, Tuesday afternoon from Kiwanis Park.

In the first game, the Buccaneers (6-17) struck first in the bottom of the second as they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs. Third baseman Judith St. Clair opened up the scoring with a double to left field, scoring Julia Chance and Miranda Byerly. After an error, a stolen base and a walk, Shawnda Cole came to the plate and singled in St. Clair and Rhea Holler to make the score 4-0. Cole would eventually score on a passed ball. The final run of the inning came as Andrea Roberts scored on a groundout to third by Jessica Hodge.

ETSU would score two more runs in the fifth to seal the game. After a Byerly single and a St Clair walk, Holler came to the plate and tripled, scoring the two baserunners.

Buccaneer starter Tiffany Vandergriff (5-7) pitched all five innings, allowing just two hits for her third consecutive win. Jennifer Overstreet (3-8) received the loss, pitching one inning, giving up six runs.

The Buccaneers wasted no time getting on the board in game two, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Vandergriff led the inning off with a single, followed by a single by Hodge and a walk by Melonie Collins. Vandergriff and Hodge scored on wild pitches. Collins and Byerly, who also walked, were sent to the plate on a two-run double by St. Clair.

Radford (13-22) would answer with a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Hartzog to cut the Buccaneer lead to 4-1.

The Highlanders stormed out of the gates in the top of the third inning, scoring nine runs before the Buccaneers could record an out. Every starter would score a run in the inning, as Radford tallied nine hits and were benefitted by three ETSU errors. The biggest blow of the inning was Lara Wohlgemuth’s two-run double with one out, scoring Hallie East and Tina Rogers.

Only one more run would be scored, as Payton Nash singled in Ashleigh Brooks in the top of the fourth to provide the final margin of victory, 11-4.

Radford starter Teresa Brewer (4-7) overcame a rocky start to scatter 11 hits and allow four runs in a complete game victory. ETSU starter April Arnold (0-5) was not as fortunate, pitching two innings, giving up seven runs.

Hodge had the best game at the plate for the Buccaneers, going 4-4 with one run scored. For Radford, Brooks went 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Wohlgemuth and Nash led the Highlanders with 2 RBI each.

The Buccaneers return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as they host SoCon rival Georgia Southern in a doubleheader at Kiwanis Park.
