Softball Falls in Both Ends of Doubleheader at Furman

Sunday, April 08, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State softball team fell 4-0 and 1-0 to Furman University in a Saturday doubleheader in Greenville, S.C.

In game one, Furman (16-20, 5-3 SoCon) pitcher Chrissy Hacker was dominant, throwing a no-hitter, striking out six. Furman jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. That would be all Hacker would need as she allowed just one baserunner, a hit batter in the second inning.

Game two featured more great pitching as both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Furman's Kelli Leachman then singles in Hacker, who had reached base on catcher's interference.

Buccaneer (8-21, 4-6) pitcher Tiffany Vandergriff pitched both eds of the doubleheader, tossing two complete games. She pitched well, allowing five runs in 12.2 innings pitched. Vandergriff, Miranda Byerly and Deeann Stratton collected the three hits for the Bucs in the second game.

ETSU and Furman square off in the final game of their weekend series Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
