Softball Falls in Both Ends of Doubleheader to Eastern Kentucky

Tuesday, April 10, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels defeated the East Tennessee State softball team in both ends of a doubleheader, 5-0 and 12-2, from Kiwanis Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Kentucky (28-12) wasted no time getting on the board in the first game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Amy Herrington tripled to right, scoring Sue Roesslein from second for the first run. After a Bethany Herrington walk, Megan Mills doubled in a run. The final run would score on a Kelly Bromley single.

The pitching then took over, with both teams combining for just two hits over the next three and a half innings. Eastern Kentucky scored a single run in the fifth as Elise Burch scored on an error, and another run in the sixth as Burch singled in Renee LeBlanc. Those two runs would provide the final 5-0 margin of victory.

Lady Colonel starter Joselle Csora was dominant, allowing just two hits and striking out five in seven innings pitched. Buccaneer starter Tiffany Vandergriff allowed ten hits and three earned runs in pitching her league-leading 16th complete game.

Game two started out much as game one did, as the Lady Colonels scored three runs in the top of the first. Mills hit her second first inning double, a shot to left field that would score Amy Herrington, Bethany Herrington and Roesslein. Eastern Kentucky would add a single run in the top of the second as Burch singled in Michelle Williams from third.

ETSU (8-23) would trim the EKU lead in half on a Reah Holler single in the bottom of the fourth that would score two. Judith St. Clair scored on the single while Julia Chance would score on an error by the first baseman.

Two runs was as close as ETSU would get as Eastern Kentucky scored four runs in each the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh to provide the final 12-2 score.

In the fifth, EKU scored their first run as Amy Herrington would score on an error by April Arnold. Bethany Herrington would next score on a error by Melonie Collins. Diana Barreras would drive in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, driving in Amy Wells. Kelli Bromley would score the last run of the stanza on a Marsha Giles wild pitch.

In the seventh, Jen Christiansen singled in Kim Kelly to begin EKU’s scoring. Burch would then single in Barreras. Christiansen and Ashley Totten would score on an error to close out the scoring.

Kristina Mahon and Jessica Soto combined on a solid pitching performance, allowing six hits and one earned run in seven innings. ETSU starter Giles allowed 13 hits and five earned runs in her seven innings of work.

Megan Mills went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s for Eastern Kentucky. Vandergriff and Chance had two hits each for ETSU.

The Buccaneers return to action on Thursday, April 12 as they travel to Tennessee Tech for a makeup game from earlier in the season.
