NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Dimeco Childress scored 30 points to lead all scores, but Vanderbilt held off East Tennessee State, 87-76.

Greg LaPointe and Anthony Williams sparked a second-half surge that lifted undefeated Vanderbilt to the victory.

With the score tied at 46 with 14:25 remaining, LaPointe and Williams, Vanderbilt's only two seniors, combined to score 19 points in a 26-10 Vanderbilt run that gave the Commodores (5-0) a 72-56 lead with 7:30 to play.

East Tennessee (1-3) slowly chipped away at Vanderbilt's lead but could get no closer than seven points, 76-69, with 3:16 to play.

The Buccaneers, who trailed 41-33 at halftime, outscored the Commodores 13-5 to open the second half before Cory Seels' tying basket for Vanderbilt.

Williams and Matt Freije added 14 points apiece for the Commodores. Billy Richmond finished with 10.

East Tennessee State's Dimeco Childress enjoyed a homecoming of sorts. Childress, from nearby Columbia, Tenn., scored 30 points to lead all scorers. Renaldo Johnson added 12 points for the Buccaneers.

The game was filled with fouls, as East Tennessee State committed 27 personal fouls and Vanderbilt 23.

The Commodores were 27 of 35 (77.1 percent) from the free throw line. East Tennessee State made just 16 of 25 free throw attempts (64 percent).

Vanderbilt will play its first road game this season Tuesday in Bowling Green, Ky. The Commodores face Western Kentucky.
