Football Hosts Spring Blitz Weekend

Thursday, April 12, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State football program will host its Buccaneer Spring Football Blitz on April 20-21, 2001 to celebrate the spring football season. To complete the exciting weekend, legendary collegiate football coach Danny Ford will speak at the Football Awards Banquet on April 21.

Ford is the youngest head coach ever to win a national championship. He led the 1981 Clemson Tigers to a 12-0 record and a 22-15 win against Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. The National Coach of the Year, Ford won five ACC titles and is one of only two coaches in ACC history with more than a 75-percent winning mark. Ford left Clemson and became the head coach at Arkansas from 1994-97.

The weekend festivities will begin with the third annual John Robert Bell Golf Tournament on Friday, April 20. Public registration begins at 8 a.m. with all proceeds going to the Buccaneer football's 12th man fund. The fee is $100 for adults and $50 for students. Later in the day, ETSU's Gridiron Club will host a picnic at Rotary Park on North Broadway Street. Pre-registration is requested -- $7 for adults, $4 for kids.

The weekend continues at Noon on April 21 with the annual spring game. The public is invited to watch the Blue & Gold scrimmage that concludes the spring season. Before the game, at 11 a.m., there will be a punt, pass and kick competition for youth. The winners will be invited to watch the game from the sideline.

Following the spring game will be the Football Awards Banquet. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the ETSU Culp Center's Ballroom. Advance registration in required and the cost is $20 per guest.
