Wednesday, March 29, 2000

Johnson City, Tenn. - Anastasia Dishong (Prescott, Ariz.), a member of the East Tennessee State University volleyball team and Evan Hawkins (Knoxville, Tenn.), a member of the track & field team, have been selected to participate in the fourth annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, which will be held May 28-June 1, 2000, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The mission of the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of student-athletes who will actively participate in and experience a multitude of challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities. It will provide NCAA student-athletes with the opportunity to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

Dishong and Hawkins were selected from a total of 885 nominations. Dishong spends time as a fundraising coordinator for the Tri-City Volleyball program and working as a peer tutor in schools throughout the Tri-Cities area. In addition, she is a board member of the Student Athletes Advisory Commitee.

Hawkins has spent time as a volunteer for the Powell Community Physical Development program for children. In addition, he is also a board member of the Student Athletes Advisory Committee. Hawkins was a two-time All-Southern Conference champion in the 400 meters and was the 1998 Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year.

The 2000 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on critical issues identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommended by members of the Divisions I, II, and III NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

Participating student-athletes will represent all NCAA divisions, a variety of different sports, both genders and different ethnicities.
