Men's Basketball Signs Jerald Fields To National Letter of Intent

Tuesday, November 16, 1999

Johnson City, Tenn. - The East Tennessee State University athletic department announced the signing of Jerald Fields to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Bucs. Fields, who signed his NLI at the Southeast Boys and Girls Club in Gainesville, Fla., becomes the first student-athlete to sign during the early signing period which began on Nov. 10.

Fields, a 6-6/240 pound forward, is beginning his senior season at Gainesville High School. As a junior, Fields averaged 9.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as Gainesville won the Florida State Class 5A Championship and posted a record of 28-5. Fields has led Gainesville in rebounding, blocked shots, and field goal percentage for the past two years. This past summer, Fields was a member of the Florida Addidas (AAU) team that competed in tournaments at the University of North Carolina, Duke and in Maryland.

"Jerald is an outstanding player who comes from a great high school program that won the state championship last year," said ETSU Head Coach Ed DeChellis. "He can play either the three or four and will provide help in the frontcourt. We look for him to have an outstanding career in the Southern Conference."

"I really liked the coaching staff, the city and the family-like atmosphere when I visited ETSU," said Fields. "The coaches told me that I will have a chance to get a lot of playing time."

"We had an opportunity to have an in-home visit with Coach DeChellis and Coach Jerry Pelphrey and we were impressed with how upfront they were about the academic requirements that they expect of Gerald," said Wayne Fields (Gerald's father). "Jerald's description of both the school and the atmosphere, in addition to the opportunity for him to contribute immediately, make this a good mutual relationship."
