Ryan Coulter moves to second place in A-Sun history for career shutouts
MACON, Ga. (Oct. 6, 2013) – The ETSU men’s soccer team capped off an unbeaten weekend with a 2-0 win at Mercer Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the Bucs’ third consecutive shutout and moved ETSU into a first-place tie with Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun standings.
The Buccaneers (4-3-3, 2-0-0) enjoyed their highest-scoring offensive performance of the season en route to clinching the victory, with David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) each recording their first goals of the season.
“I was very pleased that we were able to show composure in this match and retain possession high up on the field,” ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese said. “That led to us creating some excellent chances and scoring two goals.”
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) recorded his league-leading seventh shutout of the season. With the result, Coulter moved to second place in Atlantic Sun history for most career shutouts (22), just one shutout away from equaling the all-time record of 23 set by Florida International University’s Jeff Cassar from 1992-95.
ETSU dominated play throughout the afternoon, outshooting the Bears (3-8-0, 1-1-0) by a wide, 15-6 margin.
“This was a very mature performance from our team,” Calabrese said. “When you play Mercer, you must be ready to compete and we did that very well.”
Geno was credited with the game-winning goal after beating the Mercer keeper on a one-time mid-air volley off a cross from fellow senior Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas). The score was the first of the season for Geno, the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, who missed the first two games of the season due to injury.
