ETSU picked to finish second in conference play
MACON, Ga. (Aug. 15, 2013) – With the start of men’s soccer season mere weeks away, four senior Buccaneers have garnered Atlantic Sun preseason honors, with ETSU being picked to finish second in league play.
ETSU seniors Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigera), David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.), and Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Tex.) were each named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team, while reigning Atlantic Sun Goalkeeper of the Year Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) was selected as the Fan-Voted Goalkeeper of the Year.
Headlining the group were Geno, the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, and Woodruff. In a vote among Atlantic Sun coaches, Geno was tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, while Woodruff was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Geno, one of just two Buccaneers to start all 20 games last season, set program single-season records for goals (11), assists (8), and points (30) en route to being named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive year and becoming the first ETSU player to win the conference Player of the Year award.
Woodruff started 15 games for the Buccaneers last year, assisting on five goals and helping anchor a defense that accrued a program record goals against average of 0.93, earning a spot on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Team.
Fubara, who ranks third in ETSU history for minutes played (5,406), joins Geno and Woodruff on the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team. The Ogbema, Nigeria native played 1,734 minutes last season and was an integral part of an ETSU offense that scored a program-record and league-leading 1.55 goals per game.
Coulter, who played every minute of every match last season (1,934) won the Fan-Voted Goalkeeper of the Year honor by receiving more than 200 votes. Coulter maintained a goals allowed average of 0.61 during conference play last season, becoming the first ETSU player to win the conference Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Geno also won the popular vote, earning the Fan-Voted Player of the Year honor.
In a preseason poll among A-Sun coaches, the Buccaneers were slated to finish second in league play behind defending conference champion Florida Gulf Coast. ETSU returns seven starters from last season’s squad that saw the program to its third consecutive campaign of 10 or more wins.
The Buccaneers will open the season in Columbia, S.C. versus South Carolina Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m before playing their home opener Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. against Kentucky.
