LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
ETSU (21-22, 8-9 A-Sun) snapped a four-game losing skid as the Bucs posted a 5-4 walk-off win over Radford Wednesday night at Thomas Stadium.
Andrew Lasure (Stanford, Ky.) tied the game at four when he delivered a pinch-hit double in the eighth and Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) sent the Buccaneer faithful happy when his triple down the right field line scored Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) from first, marking ETSU’s fourth walk-off win of the year.
Riopedre reached base four times on the night as he went 3-for-4 and walked once, while Kevin Phillips (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with two hits and drove in a run to extend his hitting streak to six straight games. Freshman Chris Cook (Kingsport, Tenn.) moved his streak to 12 consecutive games with a hit following a two-out single in the fifth, while Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) – who scored the tying run in the eighth – pushed his hit streak to eight straight games after beating out an infield single.
The Buccaneer bullpen ended the night tossing 2.2 scoreless innings as Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) held the Highlanders scoreless for 1.2 innings and Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned the win after pitching a perfect ninth.
With the win, ETSU has now won 11 of its last 14 games at Thomas Stadium, while Freeman and Cook have hit safely in 11 straight home games.
ABOUT USC UPSTATE
USC Upstate (14-30, 4-13 A-Sun) is playing its first game since falling to then-No. 8 South Carolina, 6-1, on April 23 in Columbia.
The Spartans are led by senior outfielder Tyler Lesch as he leads the team in average (.313), hits (57), runs (25), stolen bases (8) and on-base percentage (.388). Meanwhile, junior infielder Erik Samples has registered a team-best 15 doubles and 26 RBI, along with tying for the team lead with two home runs.
Since winning four-in-a-row from April 8-12, USC Upstate has lost its last six games and is just 4-14 on the road.
ETSU holds a 17-11 lead in the all-time series, and the Bucs have won 12 of the 18 games against the Spartans since joining the A-Sun, including three of four last season.
Last year, the Bucs won two of three at USC Upstate to open the conference slate, while also defeating the Spartans, 4-3, in the A-Sun Tournament, courtesy of Andrew Green’s (Powell, Tenn.) walk-off single.
Since 2008, eight of the 18 games have been decided by two runs or less, while the Blue and Gold are 4-5 against USC Upstate in games played in Johnson City.
Will Chesney is 1-0 and hasn’t allowed a run in three appearances (4.0 innings) against the Spartans, while Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) hit .389 (7-18) with two doubles, two walks, and four runs in four games versus USC Upstate last year.
