JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (March 24, 2014) – Carding scores of 76 and 73, senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) led the ETSU women’s golf team during first and second round play Monday in the Briar’s Creek Invitational at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek.
Evans’ play and the solid contributions of her teammates helped the 44th-ranked Buccaneers to a tie for fifth place in the team competition. In fact, the Bucs are just seven strokes back of first place and 34th-ranked GRU Augusta, which holds a four-stroke edge over second place East Carolina.
Third and final round action at the Briar’s Creek Invitational is set for Tuesday and fans can watch the scoring live via Golfstat.com.
"Today was a long, challenging day, but we had a complete team effort,” said ETSU assistant coach Lauren Stratton, who is on the road with the team as head coach Stefanie Shelton is on maternity leave. “Everyone contributed today, and we have a good chance going into tomorrow.”
Evans – who finished the first day at 5-over-par 149 – is just four strokes back of a trio of players who finished tied atop the individual leaderboard at 1-over-par 145 on the day. That group includes East Carolina’s F. Gustafsson Spang, Maryland’s Alexandria Papell and Clemson’s Lauren Salazar.
Meanwhile, other Buccaneer results included a tie for 24th by senior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain), while freshman Linda Dobele (Ogre, Latvia) tied for 36th.
