ASHEVILLE, N.C. (March 11, 2014) – The ETSU baseball team hits the road for the second time this season as the Bucs play a midweek game at UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Greenwood Baseball Field.
ETSU (7-8) is looking to win the season series over the Bulldogs as the Bucs defeated UNC Asheville, 11-6, back on Feb. 25 at Thomas Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
The Bucs dropped their second straight series as ETSU lost two of three to Hartford last weekend at Thomas Stadium.
ETSU suffered a tough 1-0 setback in the opener despite freshman right-hander Austin Hutchison (Jefferson County, Tenn.) striking out 10 hitters, while the Bucs bounced back behind Jimmy Nesselt’s (Plantation, Fla.) fourth straight quality start on Saturday. Nesselt allowed two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work and freshman Zach Mize’s (Gainesville, Ga.) leadoff homer in the fifth proved to be the game-winning run. Unfortunately, the Blue and Gold were unable to hang onto a two-run lead in Sunday’s rubber match as the Hawks scored five runs in the fifth and added eight more in the seventh to rally past ETSU, 18-6.
Senior Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) extended his hit streak to six straight games after hitting .417 (5-12) with one double and two RBI in the weekend series. Sophomore Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) hit .385 (5-13) with one double, two runs scored and two stolen bases against Hartford.
As a team, the Bucs tied a season high with 14 hits in Sunday’s setback.
ABOUT UNC ASHEVILLE
The Bulldogs have dropped 10 of their first 13 games to start the season and were swept at Appalachian State over the weekend. Prior to facing ETSU on Wednesday, UNC Asheville hosts Tennessee Tech on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore outfielder Erik Connolly leads the team in batting average (.282), runs (11) and RBI (8), while six of Kyle Towles’ 12 hits have gone for doubles.
Thirty-two of UNC Asheville’s 99 hits have gone for extra bases – 24 doubles, three triples and five home runs.
As a team, the Bulldogs have been outscored 89-53 and are being outhit .328 to .233 on the season. UNCA has been outscored 42-10 in the first three innings, but the Bulldogs are outscoring their foes, 31-22, in the fourth through sixth innings.
Freshman left-hander Jamin McCann (Kingsport, Tenn.) will get the start for the Blue and Gold, while UNCA has yet to announce its starter.
McCann tossed five scoreless innings and earned the win in ETSU’s 4-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky last Tuesday at Thomas Stadium. This marks McCann’s second career start as he is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10.0 IP) in three appearances on the year.
The Bucs lead the all-time series, 30-20, as ETSU defeated the Bulldogs last month at home.
In last month’s win, Taylor and Freeman combined to go 6 for 7 with two doubles, one triple, a home run, five runs scored and six RBI. Taylor went 3 for 3 with a walk, double, triple, four runs and three RBI, while Freeman was 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBI. Senior right-hander Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings while striking out three Bulldog hitters.
ETSU swept the series last season and has won 16 of the last 18 games over UNCA.
