EL PASO, Texas (Nov. 26, 2013) – ETSU junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) began and ended the final round of the Sun Bowl Western Refining All-America Golf Classic with a birdie en route to firing a 1-under-par 70 on Tuesday from the El Paso Country Club.
Pugh ended the top-ranked collegiate tournament with a three-round score of 2-over 215 (73-72-70), placing him tied for 17th with California’s Michael Weaver. Four of Pugh’s nine birdies came in Tuesday’s final round as the Welshman also birdied No. 4 and 15 – both par-4s.
New Mexico’s Gavin Green won the tournament after registering a three-round score of 11-under 202. Green, who entered the day two shots back of Cory Whitsett (Alabama), rallied to the win after firing a 5-under 66 in the final round. Green defeated Whitsett by one stroke.
The 21-player field consisted of last season’s Division I All-Americans (with a limit of two per team), along with special invitations for Walker Cup players (who are currently in college), and for US and British Amateur winners. Pugh earned his spot by playing in his second Walker Cup this past September.
Pugh also joined a list of former Bucs to be a part of the elite group to play in this tournament – Skeeter Heath (1975-76), Alan Strange (1976), Rex Kuramoto (1989), Bobby Gage (1989), Garrett Willis (1994-95), David Christensen (1998), Chris Wisler (1999), Rhys Davies (2004-05), and Gareth Shaw (2007).
Pugh and the Bucs begin their spring season Feb. 3-4 at the Sea Best Invitational in Jacksonville.
