JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 14, 2013) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held a special graduation ceremony on Tuesday morning inside the ballroom of the D.P. University Culp Center for senior student-athletes who were forced to miss their graduation this past Saturday.
Graduating seniors from ETSU’s baseball, track & field and softball teams earned their diplomas in a ceremony which began at 9:30 a.m. The baseball team was on the road at Mercer during Saturday’s graduation; the men’s and women’s track & field teams were at the A-Sun Championships; and the softball team had to sign up for the special graduation in the months prior due to the A-Sun Softball Tournament planned to run through Saturday.
“I was really impressed with the number of people, university personnel and fellow student-athletes who were on hand to support their teammates,” said ETSU Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Richard Sander. “It is a wonderful event and it really emphasizes the commitment the university makes to the athletic department and the student-athletes.
“It gives the opportunity for our student-athletes competing at the time to really be recognized as graduates of the university. I think it is really special that President Noland, the vice presidents and the deans make the effort to be there for 15 student-athletes. It is a strong statement about how important graduating our student-athletes is to the university.”
Over 250 people were in attendance for the ceremony.
