BLANCO, Texas (Feb. 17, 2013) – Finishing first and second round play tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard, ETSU sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) led the ETSU women’s golf team’s efforts during the first day of action in the Jim West Challenge Sunday at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club.
Wahl and the Buccaneers are currently tied for fifth on the team leaderboard, 20 strokes back of host Texas State. Individually, Wahl is just six strokes off the pace set by Illinois State’s Rachel Powers, who leads the event at 4-over-par 148.
Scores were relatively high for everyone on Sunday, as teams battled unfavorable weather conditions throughout the day.
"These were the toughest conditions we have faced yet this year,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “This being our first rounds after winter break, we struggled to get our heads into the same mindset that gave us success in the fall. We look forward to having the chance to play tomorrow.”
Along with Wahl, other ETSU results included a tie for 20th by junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and a tie for 29th by senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa).
Third and final round action in the Jim West Challenge is scheduled for Monday. Fans can watch live scoring of the event by visiting Golfstat.com and clicking on the tournament link.
