Bucs conclude tournament 15-4 in singles, 6-3 in doubles
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team finished off the Wake Forest Winter Classic on Monday, taking five-of-six singles matches from Radford while winning a doubles contest against Elon.
For the three days combined, the Buccaneers head back to Johnson City having gone 15-4 against the singles competition and 6-3 in doubles. Those marks include a 6-0 sweep of Wake Forest in singles on Sunday, and a 2-1 victory over the Demon Deacons in doubles on Saturday.
“It was a pleasing three days of tennis,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “We let an opportunity slip this morning on No. 1 doubles, but credit to Elon and its fight. To come away with the results we had this weekend is a great start to the year and something to build on.”
The opportunity that slipped Monday morning saw two regionally ranked doubles pairs square off on court one. Elon’s Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansakar – No. 10 in the Carolina Region – took on Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezula) and Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) – No. 8 in the Ohio Valley Region – with the Phoenix duo winning the set, 8-5. The other two doubles matches were split, with the Buccaneers winning in a tiebreak at No. 2, while Elon won decisively at No. 3.
Following the doubles session, ETSU went up against Radford in singles to conclude the three-day festivities, taking five matches in convincing fashion. Senior newcomer Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) won at No. 2 against Hana Babic, 6-1, 6-1; Gerbasi defeated Taylor Newman, 6-2, 6-2; Choo cruised by Meg Napolitano, 6-2, 6-1; junior Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) rolled by Taylor Fay, 6-2, 6-1; finally, sophomore Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) took care of Allison Michaels, 6-0, 6-4. Junior Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) lost a close one with Gemma Valls in the top match, winning the first set and ultimately dropping the match tiebreak, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).
