JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2013) – Laura Jansone’s dream is coming true.
A former ETSU women’s golf standout and two-time Atlantic Sun Conference individual champion, Jansone recently finished tied for 25th at the Ladies European Tour qualifying school. That effort was good enough to earn her an LET card and guarantee her status for the upcoming year on one of the world’s premier professional tours.
“I had trained hard on and off the course for this tour school and I knew I could do it,” said Jansone, a four-time individual tournament champion during her time at ETSU from 2006 to 2010. “It was a good challenge and great fun, especially on the last day.”
A Jurmala, Latvia native, Jansone ultimately needed some heroics to qualify. By her own estimation, she needed to shoot at least 3 or 4-under par on the final day of qualifying to earn her card. After a bogey on the 17th hole of her final round put her at 3-under-par, she found herself 182 yards from the 18th green after an errant tee shot left her behind a mound of bushes.
Facing a blind shot and with her tour card on the line, Jansone stuck a 4-iron just 12 feet from the pin and drained the subsequent birdie putt.
One person not surprised by Jansone’s ability to overcome adversity and make the critical shot when needed was ETSU women’s golf coach Stefanie Shelton.
"Laura is one of the most accomplished golfers to ever play in our program,” Shelton said. “She is a winner in every pursuit, from setting records on the golf course to graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her work ethic is second to none and she is a great role model for all golfers at ETSU.”
Jansone said she is looking forward to the upcoming season on the LET.
“I am very excited about next year – to see new places and to play new tournaments in different countries,” she said. “Also, it’s going to be great to be closer to home.”
