JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Apr. 9, 2012) – The ETSU baseball team returns to action with a pair of midweek non-conference games against UNC Asheville and Tennessee.
The Bucs will travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and will host SEC foe Tennessee on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. inside Thomas Stadium. Live stats will be available through Gametracker at ETSUBucs.com. In addition, Wednesday’s game will be broadcasted online at ETSUBucs.com.
Just three weeks ago, starting pitcher Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) tossed three scoreless innings and the bullpen allowed just one run over six innings to lift the Bucs to a 3-1 victory over UNC Asheville in Johnson City.
Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) and Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) led the Bucs at the plate with two hits each. In that contest, Riopedre drove in his first career run. Meanwhile, Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) had the other RBI of the day as he finished 1-for-4.
Freeman leads the Bucs in batting average (.368), hits (42), RBI (25) and on-base percentage (.408). Meanwhile, Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) are each batting .300 or better. Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) continues to pace the Atlantic Sun in home runs with 11, while Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) leads the league with four triples.
UNC Asheville enters the contest with a 15-18 overall record and a 5-7 mark in Big South Conference play. Aaron Wright (.345), Hunter Bryant (.330) and Jordan Lurie (.312) are each batting over .300, while Billy Creighton is perhaps the biggest power threat with three home runs and a team-high 22 RBI. ETSU now leads the all-time series against UNCA, 27-19.
Tennessee heads into Wednesday’s game with a 20-12 overall record and an even 6-6 in the SEC. The Vols are coming off a conference series at South Carolina in which they took one of three against the Gamecocks. Will Maddox leads UT with a .308 average, while also adding four doubles, a triple, a home run and 11 RBI. Drew Steckenrider leads the Volunteers with five home runs and a .429 slugging percentage. Tennessee leads the all-time series against ETSU, 55-13. However, the Bucs have won the last four meetings against the Volunteers. ETSU won both games of the series in 2008 and 2009.
The Bucs return home to for Atlantic Sun play this weekend with a three-game series against USC Upstate beginning on Friday at Thomas Stadium.
