AUGUSTA, Ga. (March 18, 2012) – After a slow start to the day, the ETSU women’s golf team regained their composure and held on for a solid fifth place showing during third and final round action at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate Sunday at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
Senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) led the team during the final round, carding a team-best score of 1-over-par 73 and moving up 10 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 14th. Meanwhile, freshman teammate Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) posted the best finish of any ETSU player by tying for 12th individually.
“The ladies were faced with a rough start to the day, but I was proud of them for hanging on to finish fifth,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “It was really good to see solid performances from both Mayte and Gab.”
UT-San Antonio captured the team title by six strokes over host Augusta State. Meanwhile, Purdue’s Paula Reto started the day in second place behind Augusta State’s Casey Kennedy, but overcame Kennedy to win the individual title by 10 strokes.
Reto built such a wide margin by firing an impressive 8-under-par 64 in the final round.
Along with Wahl and Vizcarrondo, other ETSU results included a tie for 30th by sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany), a tie for 34th by sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), and a tie for 48th by junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa).
The ETSU women will return to action on March 26th in the John Kirk Lady Panther Intercollegiate – their final tournament prior to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012 spring season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
