GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 2, 2011) – ETSU senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) fired a 1-over-par 72 and is just one stroke back of the individual lead, as she and her fellow Buccaneers tied for second place on the team leaderboard following first round play Sunday in the Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Starmount Country Club.
Vizcarrondo was one of four Bucs to finish in the Top 25 individually, as freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) carded a score of 5-over-par 76 to end the day tied for 10th, while teammates Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) tied for 25th with scores of 7-over 78.
Vizcarrondo trails individual leader Alexa Rancourt of Furman by one stroke, while the ETSU women are tied with UNCG for second place on the team leaderboard after posting team scores of 304. Maryland leads the team competition at 303.
“I was really proud of the girls for fighting through a rough start and some tough conditions early on today,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “To put us just one shot out of the lead was impressive. Mayte played fantastic golf and was a great leader out there for us.”
